Cable Sucks

Getting rid of our cable was the best decision that we ever made. There was never anything on that wasn’t total crap and we were so tired of flipping through channels over and over with nothing to watch. Most of the time we endedĀ up leaving it on HGTV or Foodtv and just watching what ever happened to be on.

We were paying close to $120 a month and that was without the movie channels. The most satisfying moment was calling Directv and telling them we were canceling our account. They pleaded and begged for us to continue being a loyal customer. They promised they would reward us with months of free premium movie channels, large discounts and new devices but that wasn’t going to sway us. Those so-called “freebies” were part of the reason we couldn’t wait to get out from under them in the first place, horrible service!

We now stream our television shows and movies from the internet through our Blu-ray Ā player and Chromecast device and they work perfectly. They don’t even go out when its cloudy… imagine that. We do have memberships for Netflix, Amazon Prime and Hulu Plus and you can find pretty much everything through one of these services.

  • Ā Amazon Prime is $99 a year but I believe it is 100% worth it! You get tons of free streaming movies and television shows. At present count 2,000+ television shows and 15,000+ movies. Including most of the HBO shows if you are a fan. You get free 2-day shipping on orders through Amazon and even free books for your e-reader. Breaks down to $8.25 a month.
  • Netflix, which everyone knows about, is a great service and we are big fans. For their streaming service it starts atĀ $7.99 a month and if you want to still receive discs that service starts at $7.99 a month. We still get the discs because that is the best way to get the most popular new releases quickly.
  • Hulu Plus is a great service for watching new television episodes of your favorite shows. It has its plus and minuses. It drives me nuts that I pay a monthly fee and still have to watch commercials. I can see that with the free service but what am I paying a monthly fee for?? The cost for Hulu Plus is $7.99 a month.

So for as little as $24.23 a month I can watch all the shows I used to watch on Directv plus much more and I am saving almost a $100 dollars a month. I consider that a win, win situation.

  • The other item I would suggest you get, that is worth every penny, is Google’s Chromecast. We love this device! It costs a mere $35 dollars and plugs into any television set. It allows you to take what you are watching from any mobile device or laptop and cast it to your television. We like using our Netflix and Hulu Plus apps on our iPads and then casting it to our large screen TV. The user interface on the apps are a lot better and have more features than the interface on your TV. But really anything that is playing on you computer/mobile device can be cast to your television. It really is plug and play and you can take the device with you and plug it in anywhere. Your device just needs to be on the same network as your mobile device or laptop. Great for hotels and traveling!

Now it can be a little tricky when you have shows that you want to watch the day they are released, such as Walking Dead for example. There are ways to work around that but I won’t be suggesting those Ā on here … wink, wink šŸ˜‰ We don’t have many shows that we just have to watch that night except Walking Dead and we make a little part out of that and watch it with friends.

It has been about 2 1/2 months and we don’t miss it at all. In fact it has helped us find some great shows that we wouldn’t have found other wise. Some of my new favorite finds:
